Symetra has exclusively engaged Harris Legal Search to recruit a Senior Counsel to support their Commercial Mortgage Loan Department.  This position will be based in Bellevue, Washington.

Harris Legal Search has been exclusively engaged by Symetra to recruit a Senior Counsel, Commercial Mortgage Loans to be based in Bellevue, WA.  The Senior Counsel will assume responsibility for supporting the Commercial Mortgage Loan Department in all facets of the day-to-day legal issues arising in the origination and servicing of mortgage loans made by Symetra across the country, including support for state-specific document form development.


The Senior Counsel will:

  • Service day-to-day legal needs, consisting of negotiation of legal provisions, loan document customization and drafting, and review of borrower organizational documents, in a high-paced mortgage loan department.
  • Consult with business to identify, assess, and resolve legal risks and problems, including loans in default, foreclosure or workout.
  • Manage outside counsel engaged for mortgage loan origination and servicing work, as well as for troubled debt and litigation, including obtaining necessary direction on state-specific laws and practices.
  • Identify areas for process improvement and streamlining, including refinement of standardized templates, automation, checklists, and training.
  • Keep abreast of legal issues affecting commercial mortgage loans by active participation in relevant trade groups.
  • Establish respect, trust and confidence of mortgage loan clients and demonstrate leadership on legal issues for effective working relationship.
  • Provide counsel / experience outside of mortgage loan department on other legal issues within expertise.


  • JD degree from an accredited law school.
  • 5 plus years of relevant law firm or in-house commercial mortgage loan experience representing institutional lenders.
  • Specific experience with commercial mortgage loans, particularly $5 million and under.
  • Bar admission in at least one state or in D.C., with expectation of eventual general admission to the Washington State Bar Association or limited admission to the WSBA as in-house counsel.


  • Strong knowledge of commercial real estate lending, including mortgage law, promissory notes, and guaranty enforcement.
  • Experience, from the commercial mortgage lender’s standpoint, with the following:
    • conducting due diligence on borrowers’ organizational documents and leases with tenants.
    • lease subordination agreements.
    • bankruptcy, foreclosures and loan workouts.
    • title insurance law and practice.
  • Excellent ability to draft contract language under pressure for complicated loan structures.
  • Strong contract negotiation skills.
  • Ability to pragmatically identify, analyze and find solutions for legal risks arising from loan structuring, title, leasing, borrower authority, and other matters.
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple short-term tasks under pressure.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
