Harris Legal Search has been exclusively engaged by Recreational Equipment, Inc. (“REI”) to recruit a Corporate Counsel. 

REI seeks a strong transactional business lawyer with high emotional intelligence who can contribute to multiple areas of the business.  This lawyer will be a problem solver, adviser, counselor, and active participant in the business.  This hire will contribute to REI’s success by providing legal services to the co-op and its officers and employees in the following areas/divisions: commercial contracts, technology/IT, privacy/information security, experiences/events, marketing, and digital.  This attorney will report to an Associate General Counsel.

REI is currently headquartered in Kent, WA, but moving next year to a beautiful new campus in Bellevue, WA.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Corporate Counsel will:

  • Work cross-functionally to identify risks and provide strategic, practical, and creative legal and business advice.
  • Provide high quality, timely legal services and legal risk management for the company, including reviewing, drafting, and negotiating a wide variety of contracts.
  • Build and maintain positive, supportive working relationships both intra-department and inter-department; maintain an approachable, friendly demeanor; serve business units as a partner with legal expertise.
  • Develop, improve, and maintain contract templates, corporate policies and processes and training programs.
  • Manage and work closely with outside counsel.
  • Act in alignment with and model REI’s core values and mission.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of transactional legal experience.
  • 3+ years of large law firm experience in a sophisticated transactional practice.
  • In-house experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience reviewing, drafting and negotiating a wide range of commercial contracts, particularly in technology, IT, digital, marketing, outdoor experiences, and related fields and services.
  • Demonstrated experience with technology/IT and privacy issues, ideally in a consumer-facing business.
  • Solid experience in one or more areas of retail business a plus.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, including demonstrated ability to create useful business documents and presentations in clear language.
  • Ability to use business knowledge, innovative thinking, and sound judgment in the solution of problems and the pursuit of business opportunities.
  • Ability to think strategically and provide critical analysis and risk assessments.
  • Intellectual curiosity and a willingness to learn about and support multiple areas of the business.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with multiple deadlines.  Flexible and versatile as different legal needs arise in a fast-growing retail organization.
  • Active and effective team player and collaborator with internal business clients and within own department, including excellent people skills.  Ability to build and maintain positive, supportive working relationships.
  • Demonstrated customer/client service orientation.
  • Experience counseling and training business persons with no legal background.
  • Mature judgment and demonstrated ability to work effectively with senior leaders.
  • Appreciation for and support of REI’s co-op structure, culture, and values.
  • Champion for the organization and advocate for solutions in the co-op’s overall best interest.
  • J.D. degree from top law school.
  • Bar membership in good standing in WA, or eligible for admission by motion to WA.
