Harris Legal Search has been exclusively engaged to recruit a Commercial Counsel for Adaptive Biotechnologies, Inc.

As Commercial Counsel, you will work in conjunction with the company’s business clients and other attorneys to handle commercial contract drafting and negotiations, primarily regarding Adaptive’s immunosequencing and minimal residual disease assay services and expansion efforts.

At Adaptive, you’ll be challenged, you’ll be inspired, and you’ll be part of an innovative organization making a real impact on improving the quality of life globally. No matter what your role is, you’ll find a diverse, team-driven, fun culture where your contributions truly count.

  • Evaluate and advise on potential commercial contractual arrangements and draft, review and negotiate agreements in support of business functions such as our immunosequencing and MRD assay services, laboratory services, research collaborations, clinical trials, supply chain and procurement matters, and expansion efforts.
  • Work closely with privacy and compliance attorneys and counterparts in finance, quality assurance, security, regulatory, and operations functions to spot issues and carefully evaluate and mitigate risk related to proposed contractual arrangements.
  • Support day-to-day contracting queries, including interpreting provisions in light of Adaptive’s business objectives and operational considerations, as well as legal or regulatory requirements, and advising internal clients on the ramifications of such provisions.
  • Supervise and provide direction and feedback to contract managers and/or paralegals on the preparation, negotiation, and execution of contracts.
  • Help develop, implement, and maintain contract templates, negotiation playbooks, and other legal processes to drive value and efficiency.
  • Keep informed of new laws, regulations, and industry trends affecting Adaptive.

  • At least 4-6 years of experience with transactional law in a law firm and/or in-house, including with complex commercial transactions; preferably comfortable with layers of regulatory, compliance, and privacy considerations or experience in a biotechnology or pharmaceutical company.
  • Sound business judgment; must be able to navigate complex legal issues in a contract without losing sight of the importance of the overall business goal and to succinctly explain the consequences of legal issues to non-attorneys.
  • Demonstrated client service orientation; eager to establish and own relationships with business owners and can recognize and respond quickly and pragmatically to demanding clients.
  • Thoughtful and mature presentation and communication skills, including with senior leadership and business executives.
  • Initiative to solve problems and help the contracting function drive process improvements and scalability.
  • Attention to detail and organizational and process management skills.
  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to practice law including admission, or ability to pursue admission, in Washington state.
  • A sense of humor and the ability to laugh at oneself.

Adaptive Biotechnologies is a commercial-stage biotechnology company focused on harnessing the inherent biology of the adaptive immune system to transform the diagnosis and treatment of disease. We believe the adaptive immune system is nature’s most finely tuned diagnostic and therapeutic for most diseases, but the inability to decode it has prevented the medical community from fully leveraging its capabilities. Our proprietary immune medicine platform reveals and translates the massive genetics of the adaptive immune system with scale, precision and speed to develop products in life sciences research, clinical diagnostics and drug discovery. We have three commercial products and a robust clinical pipeline to diagnose, monitor and enable the treatment of diseases such as cancer, autoimmune conditions and infectious diseases. Our goal is to develop and commercialize immune-driven clinical products tailored to each individual patient.
